Literacy Council of Frederick County 2016 Student Accomplishments

Many of our tutors say they came to the Literacy Council because they love reading and want to help others learn to read. What a generous gift this is! I remember some years ago when my Korean student began to read, very slowly and with help, Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House on the Prairie. She was proud she had gotten that far in her understanding of English, she was captivated by the story – and she learned so much about American history and culture.

But most of our students come to the Literacy Council because they have more practical goals. And this is great! (If they come to love reading books or newspapers too, so much the better.)

Here are some accomplishments from the last year:

21 of our adult learners significantly improved their employability skills.
2 became U.S. citizens.
5 registered to vote for the first time.
9 obtained a driver’s license.
9 entered another school or a job training program.
131 indicated that they had attained other personal goals, including getting a job or a better job, helping with a child’s education, gaining consumer skills, and/or attaining a higher level of wellness and a healthier lifestyle.
