Student Spotlight: Meet Our Waverley Parent Classes

Welcome to our monthly Learner Spotlight!

We invite you to meet students from two of our Parent Literacy Program classes who are featured this month in our “Learner Spotlight”.  Featured adult learners  represent the Literacy Council’s literacy programs, which also include our Tutoring, Community Class and Workplace Literacy Programs.

Congratulations to all the mothers who completed the Literacy Council’s English classes held at Waverley Elementary every Tuesday and Thursday mornings during the school year !!!👏🏼👏🏼 These photo were taken on the final day of class where the parents were celebrated for their achievements, and shared a delicious breakfast.  These classes represent a close partnership between the Literacy Council, Waverley Elementary school liaison staff member, Teresa, and the Judy Center Early Learning Hub team which provides program coordination and child care during class time.
The Judy Center’s team shared: “We also appreciate the support from the Literacy Council of Frederick County volunteers, Lynn and John Bruton, for their patience and dedication in leading this adult education program at our school and for our Judy Center families. Muchas gracias!!!”
Our Parent Literacy Program focuses on reaching and helping limited English language proficient parents of young children in the five Title I elementary schools served by the Frederick County Judy Center. Frederick County Public School (FCPS) Community Liaison staff, together with the Judy Center, work with us at Hillcrest, Lincoln, Waverley, Butterfly Ridge and Monocacy elementary schools.  Thanks to volunteer Erin Runkles, another class for parents is held each week at Butterfly Ridge Elementary, and which will continue this summer!

We participate in events to connect with parents who need English language instruction, and match them with tutors or appropriate classes. A team of volunteer tutors provides weekly tutoring for parents. Other activities include Back to School and Family Literacy events. Children’s Book Drives provide donated new books to children whose parents are tutored through the Literacy Council, and distributed at community outreach events. The majority of the Literacy Council’s adult learners are parents, demonstrating the important role adult literacy programs have on supporting children’s education.
